光緒二十九年（公元1903年）七月，清政府擬訂了《整頓圜法章程》十條，其中提出銀幣專由造幣總廠制造，保留南洋（江南）、北洋、廣東、湖北四局為分廠。一些機制的大清銀幣雖然退出了流通市場，但在其收藏市場價格一直成上漲趨勢。一些稀少的大清銀幣更是可遇而不求。
1911-1912年初辛亥革命勝利后，清帝退位，中華民國成立，當時繼續鑄造新幣以穩定當時社會的經濟。于是便開鑄了中華民國開國紀念幣、孫中山錢幣等，而中華民國時期錢幣分三個時期，分別是初期、中期和后期。
民國后期銀元主要指民國二十五年（1936）至民國三十八年（1949）。民國中期后幾年，各地軍閥逐步走向衰落，國民黨政府開始了統一幣制控制金融的進程。這一時期國民黨政府主要發行紙幣，銀元輔幣逐漸被鎳幣所代替。發行的銀元主要有黨徽布圖分幣等。解放前夕，貴州、綏遠還發行了地方銀元，但只是曇花一現。至此，銀元走完了其短暫的歷程，逐漸退出流通領域。
從以往各地的錢幣市場成交記錄來看，清代機制銀元及民國銀元市場行情一片叫好，且隨著時間的推移，其“身價”變得越來越珍貴。因其系貴金屬所鑄，制作數量比銅元、紙幣少得多，加上清末民國時期社會動蕩，存世所剩很少，比現發行的郵票、紀念幣數量少得多。可以預見，清末明初機制銀元必將成為收藏界的一匹蓄勢待發的黑馬。種種跡象表明，投資藝術品是有智慧頭腦的選擇，因而也適合民間藏友們進行珍藏！
