《芥子園畫譜》介紹了中國畫的芥子園畫譜的技法。《芥子園畫譜》自300多年前出版以來，不斷拓展出新，康熙年間的"王概本"、光緒年間的"巢勛本"為世人學畫必修之書。全書通過國畫藝術家們多年作畫、教學與出版的經驗，同時結合中老年初學者的學習特點進行編輯出版。
《畫傳》出世，備受時人贊賞。光緒十三年，何鏞在所作后序中寫道:"一病經年，面對此譜，頗得臥游之樂。"并題聯云:"盡收城郭歸檐下，全貯湖山在目中。"

畫壇巨匠齊白石，幼年家貧好學，初以雕花匠為生。20歲那年，隨師外出做活，見到一主顧家有部乾隆年間翻刻的《芥子園畫譜》五彩精致版 ，仔細翻閱之后，發現自己能畫，多不合章法，故如獲至寶，遂借來用勾影雷公像的方法，畫了半年之久，勾影了16本之多。從此，他以所畫為據來做雕花木活，既能花樣出新，畫法又合規則，為其后來繪畫打下良好基礎。據說真到晚年，白石老人還念念不忘此事。他因而40歲后畫畫出名，跨越了1個世紀，終年95周歲。
著名國畫家潘天壽，14歲到縣城讀書時，從文具店買到一部《芥子園畫譜》，成了他學畫的第一位老師。在無人指導下，他照譜學畫，如醉如癡，終成一代大師。
山水畫名家陸儼少，從小喜畫，苦于無師。12歲到南翔公學讀書時，得到一本石印的《芥子園畫譜》，像得到心愛的寶物一樣，如饑似渴地臨摹，從此邁出了畫家生涯的第一步。
