咸豐年間正值太平天國革命運動的高潮時期。此時民怨沸騰，清政府財政拮據(jù)，國庫虧空．在錢幣鑄造上大做文章，將財政危機轉(zhuǎn)嫁到老百姓身上。相繼鑄造“咸豐通寶”、“咸豐重寶”、“咸豐元寶”等種類繁多的錢幣．咸豐元年首鑄“咸豐通寶”制錢。由于太平天國革命運動的發(fā)生，和鴉片戰(zhàn)爭的爆發(fā)．錢局鑄造制錢已很難正常進行，很多省的錢局實際上處于停鑄狀態(tài)，即使開鑄，也是偷工減料 。因而造成咸豐通寶制錢精品少.此后各地太平軍連捷，加上鴉片戰(zhàn)爭的影響．清軍政府軍費開支大增，而各項稅收大減，導(dǎo)致財政拮據(jù)，國庫虧空．為了籌款鎮(zhèn)壓太平軍，緩解財政危機，清政府被迫于咸豐三年（公元1853年）開鑄大錢。下面一段話引自《大錢圖錄》咸豐三年，軍務(wù)日滋，清餉不能繼，壽陽相國權(quán)戶部議，請鑄當(dāng)十大錢，兼增鐵冶以供度支。旋推及當(dāng)五十，當(dāng)百錢。巡防王大臣續(xù)請鑄當(dāng)五百，當(dāng)千兩種。”從這段話上看說明咸豐大錢是在迫不得已的情況下開鑄的。“咸豐重寶”始鑄當(dāng)十大錢，繼而又開鑄當(dāng)五十、當(dāng)百和當(dāng)百以上，并令全國各省迅速鑄造推行。然而從古到今真正研究它們細微版別差異的論述并不多，尤其不能想研究北宋錢幣那么細致精確，所以也就必然地為今天的收藏愛好者們留下了很寬松的深入空間，常常可以在毫厘的差別甚至在更大的變化中尋找新奇的發(fā)現(xiàn)，獲得更大的研究快樂，這一點筆者不必贅述，還是由泉友們填補此處的空白吧。至于咸豐當(dāng)十錢幣版別中的種種學(xué)問，還是請專家學(xué)者給予補充為好。如果沒有去仔細閱讀和領(lǐng)會咸豐當(dāng)十錢幣，是很難體會上述魅力的，如果真正產(chǎn)生了上述感覺，就會去發(fā)掘咸豐當(dāng)十錢幣更高一層的境界。筆者不過是粗略地收集了一些咸豐當(dāng)十錢幣，還沒有真正體味其中的奧秘，將初步感覺道出來罷了。
