銀元俗稱“大洋”、“洋錢”或“花邊錢”。銀元起源于15世紀的歐洲，是銀本位制國家的主要流通貨幣。
大約在明萬歷（1573年-1620年）年間銀元流入中國。清乾隆五十八年（1793年），清政府首次在西藏鑄行“乾隆寶藏”銀幣。道光（1821年-1850年）年間，臺灣福建等地也曾仿制銀圓，稱為銀餅。光緒十六年（1890年）清廷開始正式鑄造銀元“光緒元寶”（即龍洋），各省紛起效尤。 [1] 民國時期建立銀本位貨幣制度以后，也以銀元作為主要流通幣。銀元是近代幣收藏的重要幣種之一。
晚清流入中國的外國銀元還有：英國貿易銀元，因幣面鑄有一個持杖的不列顛女神站像，俗稱人洋或站洋、站人（是英國在印度境內和在香港專為在中國境內流通而鑄造的一種銀元，背面鑄有中國圖案花紋及中文“壹圓”兩字。該幣由香港、新加坡、上海等地的英國銀行發(fā)行，總共發(fā)行約1.5億枚，流行于兩廣、閩浙、滬寧一帶）；日本銀幣，因幣面有龍紋，俗稱龍洋或龍番；其他尚有美國的貿易銀元、法國的安南銀元等。
廣東省造雙龍壽字光緒元寶一枚，此幣鑄于光緒三十一年(1905)初，為紀念慈禧七十壽辰而鑄。張炯伯在《廣東省造銀幣》一文中寫道：“惟本品因未紀年，殊難遽斷，然觀其圖案，諧作福壽，環(huán)繞雙龍，幕無英文，意含頌祝，大異常制。由此以推，成為紀念幣之一種，專鑄以祝慈禧太后七旬萬壽者也。
