遼代遼景宗耶律賢保寧年間（969-978）的鑄幣，是古泉五十名珍之一，存世量極少，版式有大字、小字、寬緣、細緣、狹穿、廣穿、背月紋等區別。其錢文右旋讀，書體隸兼八分，渾厚樸拙，古意盎然，具有獨特的民族風格，可謂影響了整個遼一代錢風。目前，根據相關資料、圖譜及所見所聞，保寧通寶平錢的統計存量大約在數十枚之內，是遼錢中的稀見品之一。

該泉直徑約3.7cm，重量約為18.6g，赤銅質，錢文旋讀，其整體書意，似隸似楷，隸意偏強，隸兼八分書，單點通，光背。鑄體稍薄，小平形制。其錢體雖然平小，然仍可見其鑄相方圓廓正，坦平地章，穿輪基本干凈。續觀其字廓，深淺適中，略顯平漫，然字廓筆劃清晰可辨，自然鑄相，本品鑄相極具自然之感，毫無做作之態。
