崇寧是中國歷史上堪稱藝術造詣最高的皇帝宋徽宗趙佶的第二個年號，距離他即位的第一個年號建中靖國僅一年時間。崇寧即崇尚熙寧國策之意，“奉神考初行之志，繹紹圣申講之文；慨念熙寧之盛際，辟開端揆之宏基。”徽宗在政治上延續神宗熙寧之策的同時，在文化藝術上則開創新氣，建立書院畫院、研究博古鑒藏、講修五禮新儀、興辦學校道觀，意圖以文致太平。
崇寧通寶是北宋徽宗趙佶崇寧年間(1102-1106年)始鑄，年號錢。有崇寧通寶、崇寧重寶和崇寧元寶三種。 崇寧通寶當十型，錢文為徽宗親書，所以又稱為御書錢。
該錢文書法清秀骨瘦，鐵劃銀鉤，是徽宗趙佶瘦金書體存留世間的真實顯現。宋徽宗更因鑄錢精絕，當時官造成色在96%-96.7%，高于崇寧重寶、崇寧元寶，而與王莽并稱"錢法二圣"，是現在青銅錢中價值最高的兩種錢幣之一。
