北宋徽宗趙佶作為一個皇帝，怠于政治，聽信奸佞，他任用蔡京、童貫等奸佞之輩主持朝政。宋徽宗本人信奉道教，大造廟宇，自稱教主道君皇帝。此外他還大肆搜刮民財，極盡侈靡，最后國庫空虛。至金兵南下時，北宋幾乎無抵抗之力，他本人也被俘去，并憂死異鄉了。但在另一方面，在文化、藝術等領域里，徽宗曾做出過重要貢獻。在貨幣文化的創新上，他也身體力行，不遺余力。人們常說，書法在運用上有三難：篆刻難，書匾難，制錢文難。此三難中方印、書匾還比較容易，而在圓錢上鑄字則要難得多了。但是宋徽宗趙佶卻“因難見巧”，在錢幣的方寸之間把他自創的“瘦金書”發揮得淋漓盡致，從而把書法藝術推上了峰巔。趙佶的書法初學黃庭堅、薛稷和褚遂良，后自成一體，被稱為“瘦金體”，鐵畫銀鉤勁瘦淡雅，風韻別致，堪稱一絕。

Zhao Yu's calligraphy was first studied by Huang Tingjian, Xue Ji and Zhu Suiliang, and later became a self-contained body, known as "lean gold body". Qian Wen written by him is unique, and his handwriting can be seen at a glance, which fully demonstrates his artistic personality and aesthetic feeling of calligraphy. Daguan Tongbao Qian was cast in the year of Huizong Daguan. Legend has it that at the end of the fifth year of Chongning (1106 A.D.), when someone was watching the stars at night, he suddenly found a comet flashing by. It was amazing that Huizong thought it was a good omen, so he changed the Yuan Dynasty. Six years of Chongning (1107 A.D.) were changed to the first year of Daguan, and then money was made.
