袁大頭是民國時期主要流通貨幣之一，“袁大頭”是對袁世凱像系列硬幣的口語俗稱，嚴謹點說叫“袁世凱像背嘉禾銀幣”。北洋政府為了整頓幣制，劃一銀幣，于民國三年（1914年）二月，頒布《國幣條例》十三條，決定實行銀本位制度。《國幣條例》規定：“以庫平純銀六錢四分八厘為價格之單位，定名為圓”，“一圓銀幣，總重七錢二分，銀八九，銅一一”，“一圓銀幣用數無限制”，即以一圓銀幣為無限法償的本位貸幣。根據這一規定，于1914年12月及1915年2月， 先后由造幣總廠及江南造幣廠開鑄一圓銀幣，幣面鐫刻袁世凱頭像，俗稱“袁頭幣”或“袁大頭”。

此枚系江西省銅元局鑄造的紀念辛亥革命的銅幣，錢幣正面中央有“大漢銅幣”四字，上緣鑄“江西省造”，下緣鑄“當制錢十文”，背面圖案為外九大星，內九小星，中間為太極圖，外圍有一圈珠點，底面布滿極細的麻布紋。圖案上的九星，原是當時的陸軍旗幟上的標志，內外共鑄十八星，寓有統一中原十八省，團結人民締造民主共和國之意，太極圖代表生生不息，中華民國永久生存之象。整個圖案代表團結全國十八革命同志，復興大漢民族，建立自由、平等、獨立的中華民國。由于發行歷史背景較為特殊，鑄期極短，鑄量甚少，彌足珍貴，被錢幣收藏界視為銅元十大珍品之一。
